Theme: Community, Grace, God’s love at work in us

Overview: An important understanding of love and God’s grace comes into play in this passage.  We must humbly acknowledge that our acts of kindness and compassion do not define love.  God does.  He loved us first, and showed it by sending Jesus.  In response to his love, we are compelled to live that love with others.  When we do, God’s love is complete, and his presence is truly reflected in our lives.  This passage calls for us to look again at our claims of love for the people around us, and to allow God’s supreme act of sacrifice to be lifted up as the central example for our lives.
