The people’s request for a king brought an end to the age of pure theocracy – where only God would be king. Faced with a well organized enemy (Philistines), who threatened their very survival, they found it difficult to trust in the way things had been. For the sake of perceived efficiency, they were even willing to deal with human oppression (or so they thought – 1 Kgs 12:1-11). In this lesson we will consider our drive to “be like others” in order to achieve a better human efficiency, rather than trusting the unseen work of God.
